Ways to Strengthen Your Eyesight

Ways to Strengthen Your Eyesight

Unlike so many other systems in the body, our vision is not something that gets stronger when we challenge it. In fact, the opposite is true – if we over challenge our eyes it will actually weaken them.

Thus, one of the first things that can be said about strengthening the eyesight is to find ways of giving the eyes a bit of a vacation. For example, if you are one of the millions of people who have to work on a computer or with print all day, take a ten minute break every 50 minutes or so. Close the eyes and count backward from one hundred, look to the right and left, and generally avoid staring at the screen (including that mobile device – yes, put it away!) for at least ten minutes.

Visit a Doctor

Another thing you can do to help your vision is to get regular and comprehensive checkups. These can identify any ongoing problems and will also help you to treat issues as they might arise. Don’t wait until something occurs to get that checkup, but instead be proactive and get a preventative exam to ensure that your eyes are as healthy as possible.

If there are some issues discovered, it could mean that a pair of glasses is in order, and that is something that should not be ignored.

Learn Some Eye Exercises

If you discover that you do indeed have some common vision problems, a VAL-Uvision doctor will be able to work with you to determine what steps can be taken to protect the quality of your vision.

You can also implement a program of at-home care. For example, each morning or just before bed, there are a few eye exercises you can do:

  • Move the eyes in a rolling motion, starting at the top of your circle of view and rotating in a clockwise pattern for ten circuits. Reverse the direction and make ten circles.
  • Practice your focus by holding an object at arm’s length. Focus the eyes very sharply on this object. As you lock in on it, slowly start to move the object towards your face, aiming it at nose height. When it gets a few inches from the nose, slowly move it back to the starting position. Repeat this five to ten times.
  • Rotate the head and neck to relieve tension and then close the eyes for at least three minutes.

Doing this will relax you and help to strengthen vision. You can also “eat your way” to stronger vision. As kids most of us were told to eat our carrots, as they were good for our eyes. Well, our parents were right.

Optometrists would say that parents gave sound advice by encouraging the consumption of antioxidants found in carrots, leafy greens and more. You also want to eat foods rich in Vitamins A, C, and E as well as the mineral zinc. Fatty fish is great for the eyes, and your VAL-Uvision eye doctor will be able to confirm the results of your dietary changes.

Optometry in Jacksonville should be your primary tool for eye health, and the tips above will ensure your vision remains strong. Additionally, with VAL-Uvision your vision is protected and maintained to the greatest degree possible.
