The Role of the Optometrist

The Optometrist is the primary eye care provider for eye and vision care.  His or her role includes not only the fitting of corrective eyeglass and contact lenses, but also the treatment of visual disorders, eye disease and infection, and trauma.  Optometrists, or eye doctors, can follow patients that have been diagnosed with eye diseases such as Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration, and are able to co-manage pre- and post-operative cataract and refractive (such as LASIK) surgery patients with eye surgeons. Proper Nutrition can Help Prevent Eye Diseases like Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration

Lately, you hear a lot about new “wonder” foods and supplements that are beneficial to our health.  This month I’d like to discuss a new supplement we are offering in our offices that directly correlates with two major eye diseases, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Most of us take a multivitamin recommended to us by our primary care physician. Unfortunately, not all vitamins are created equal.  Not all vitamins get absorbed by our bodies and are thus released.  We get a lot of vitamins from the foods that we eat, which is why it is so crucial to Read more »

Are you dealing with Eye Strain or tension headaches?

As an optometrist, I often hear people complain about eyestrain at work. With the amount of computer work people do these days, it’s no wonder. Questioning ADHD in Your Child? Don’t Rule Out Possible Vision Problems!

The diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has been the center of much controversy over the last two decades. Inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity are the key behaviors of ADHD. In an effort to help children who have difficulty excelling at school due to short attention spans, many parents, teachers, and doctors assume these children have ADD or ADHD and put them on medications.  Unfortunately, as can be the case with many prescribed medicines, they are often treating the symptoms and not the real cause. According to recent studies from optometrists, ADD and ADHD are not the only reasons a child may suffer from high distractibility and difficulty remaining on task. The truth is Read more »

Computer Vision Syndrome

As much as computers have revolutionized the way the world works, optometrists will attest to the fact that the use of computers has given rise to new challenges both at the workplace and in schools. Optometrists have found that by working long hours in front of a computer monitor, a condition referred to as “computer visions syndrome” (CVS) may develop. If you or your child spend more than two hours per day in front of a computer screen, it’s likely you will experience some degree of computer vision syndrome.

CVS is a temporary ocular condition resulting from focusing the eyes on a computer display for extended, uninterrupted periods of time. Some symptoms of CVS include headaches, blurred vision, neck pain, fatigue, eye strain, dry and irritated eyes, double vision, polyopia (multiple vision), and difficulty refocusing the eyes. Optometrists have also found that long-term side effects of untreated CVS can lead to Read more »
