Many of my patients have been told in the past that they have astigmatism, or “football-shaped” eyes, but do not know exactly what this means.  They may feel like this is an eye disease, or a reason that they cannot wear contact lenses.  While astigmatism, itself, is not an eye disease, there is a medical eye condition called keratoconus, in which a person’s eye progressively becomes more cone-shaped, which leads to a high amount of astigmatism.
