In the next few weeks, we will be delving in to a 4 part series on Eye Glasses. I can feel the anticipation building already. The history of the spectacle will be covered including the precursors of modern day glasses, as well as their invention proper. Current innovations in construction of eyeglasses and their different uses in modern day society will be touched on. But to begin, a brief and general overview of glasses will be summarized.
Modern day glasses, referred to as spectacles and eyeglasses as well, are comprised of slim metal or plastic frames which hold lenses, an optical element which transmits an refracts or bends light, just in front of the eye. Eyeglasses are typically worn for the purpose of vision correction. In modern times glasses are used for eye protection(safety glasses), Ultraviolet (UV) radiation protection for the eye(sunglasses), and now most recently as a fashion accessory(designer frames and designer eyeglasses).
Modern day glasses are mostly held in proper place by pads which are attached to the eyeglass frames and rest on the bridge of the wearer’s nose and temple arms which rest on the top of the ears. Eyeglass lenses are typically fabricated from one of a few types of plastic, including CR-39, a standard plastic, or polycarbonate lenses, which is a high quality, impact resistant plastic.
Because of the innovations of medical science and industrial/chemical fabrication techniques, plastic lenses have great benefits over the former glass made lenses of old which is where the moniker “eye glasses” or “glasses” came from. Plastic lenses are stronger more durable, achieving a rating of 40x the FDA standards for breakability. Plastics are lighter; thus giving wearer’s more comfort on the bridge of the nose. While eye glasses are no longer made with glass the name will probably stick for some time to come. It sounds catchier than eye-plastics anyways!
The exciting innovations have made huge implication of the medical field of optometry and eye care as a whole. Plastic applications for eye glass lenses have greater and advantageous optical properties than their glass precursors. These more beneficial optical properties include better transmission of visible light rays and higher powers of refraction or light bending, as well as greater absorption of ultraviolet(UV) rays. All this means that plastic eyeglass lenses are able to provide greater vision correction and eye protection qualities than ever before!
Whether you are looking to get a new pair of prescription eyeglasses, designer frames or designer sunglasses that will protect your eyes in style from the intense UV rays of the Florida summer, Valuvision Eye Care has vision centers in Jacksonville FL and Orange Park FL near you to provide for all of your family’s eye care needs.
